Chennai: Rayala Nagar paves way for urban forest

Planted on 10,000 sq ft land, the saplings have started growing with proper care and maintenance by residents and corporation officials.

Chennai: The Rayala Nagar Residents Welfare Association in Ramapuram with the assistance of Chennai corporation last week, under Miyawaki method, planted as many as 762 tree saplings of 45 different species.

Kishor, president of the association, said that the saplings were planted in the Open Space Reservation (OSR) land taken over by the civic body. "The idea on this method came to our mind after Trees Foundation, an eco-conservation organization in the town, approached us for a tree planting drive. We discussed the matter with residents. They interested.Subsequently, we spoke to corporation authorities who gave us all support to make it reality," he said.

The saplings planted here (Second Street in Rayala Nagar (Ward 155) in Ramapuram (Zone 11-Valasarawakkam) were donated by Trees Foundation. They are currently being watered twice a day.
