Sacked RTC staff get job promise, march called off

The majority of them are facing a crisis after they lost their only means of livelihood.

Thiruvananthapuram: LDF convener A. Vijayaraghavan has promised to re-employ the dismissed KSRTC empanelled employees. Following this, the striking employees gave up the proposed march to Cliff House, the official residence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, scheduled for later on Thursday.

The empanelled conductors, who were dismissed in the wake of the High Court order for providing employment to those included in the PSC list, however, decided to continue the indefinite satyagraha in front of secretariat that began on January 21.

During the meeting with the LDF convener, the dismissed conductors said that there was a precedence of making permanent the empanelled employees who have completed 10 years of service with over 120 duties in each year. Of the 3,861 dismissed conductors, 1,561 have completed 10- year service. The rest should be retained in temporary jobs, they said. The LDF convener agreed to discuss the matter with Law Minister A.K. Balan and Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran before arriving at a decision.

They had earlier taken out a long march from Alappuzha to Thiruvananthapuram wanting the government to reinstate all the empanelled employees who were terminated from the service. The majority of them are facing a crisis after they lost their only means of livelihood. Moreover, many of them could not get permanent employment through the PSC anymore as they have exceeded the upper age limit for the same.
