Banks get a 3-day break this weekend

Bank customers may face a five-day crisis at a stretch.

Hyderabad: After the conciliation talks by bank staff associations with the Central Labour Commissioner in Delhi failed on Tuesday, the unions have announced a one-day national strike on February 28 as per the previously announced schedule. Bank customers may face a five-day crisis at a stretch by way of currency shortage at ATMs due to the series of bank holidays except on February 27 – a working day.

Banks will not function from February 24 to 26, on account of Sivratri, the fourth Saturday and Sunday. If bankers go on strike on February 28, customers will have a chance of doing transactions only on February 27. They could face problems due to the non-functioning of banks for four days between February 24 and 28.

General secretary of All India Bank Employees’ Association C.H. Venkatachalam said the talks between the forum of their nine unions and the central labour commissioner have failed. “Attempts to find solutions to the unions’ demands yielded no result. Hence we will proceed with the proposed strike,” he said.
