19-year-old with Bi-VAD undergoes heart transplant
Bengaluru: The heart of a 28-year-old carpenter from Mangaluru will save the life of a 19-year-old patient in the city who is suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy for the last three months.
The teenager suffered a cardiac arrest 10 days ago and was resuscitated by doctors at MS Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre who put him on Bi-VAD (Bi-Ventricular Device).
Luckily, within a week, he underwent a heart transplant surgery at M.S. Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre.
The donor met with a road accident on February 19 and was declared brain dead on Tuesday at A.J. Hospital in Mangaluru. Doctors flew to Mangaluru early on Tuesday to retrieve the heart from the donor.
The heart was brought to Bengaluru from Mangaluru around 8.30 pm on Tuesday. It took 23 minutes to cover a distance of 33 km after a green corridor was created by the traffic police from the KIA to M.S. Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre.
