Pampore encounter enters day 3, ops underway to neutralise terrorists

The entire area has been cordoned off as security forces are engaging heavily with the terrorists.

Srinagar: The gunfight between security forces and terrorists entered the third day on Monday in Pampore, Jammu and Kashmir, with the death toll reaching to seven till now including one terrorist.

Militants inside the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) building, which is up in flames, engaged security forces in intermittent exchange of fire from 5.30 am, a police official said.

He said there were no fresh casualties so far today in the operation as security forces have adopted a strategy of wearing down militants physically as well as in terms of ammunition reserves.

The deceased included Captain Pawan Kumar of 10 Para Regiment, Lance Naik Commando Om Prakash of 9 Para Regiment, Captain Tushar Mahajan of 9 Para regiment, two CRPF head Constables R.K. Rana, Bhola Singh and civilian EDI employee Abdul Gani Mir.

The Army, CRPF and J&K Police had launched joint operation after the unidentified militants attacked a CRPF convoy bus near the EDI complex on Saturday afternoon.

The militants later entered the Institute complex after attacking the security personnel with grenades and assault rifles.

Meanwhile, the last rites of 10 Paramilitary Army Captain Pawan Kumar will be conducted with full military honours today at his village in Jind of Haryana.

The 23-year-old Captain was among the three army personnel from elite Para unit who lost their lives yesterday in the ongoing encounter with militants in Pampore, Jammu and Kashmir.
