AIMMM files pil against CAA in Supreme Court

The CAA which came into effect from January 11 has been facing widespread opposition.

Hyderabad: The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), a federation of 18 Muslim organisations, has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Supreme Court seeking an answer on to how a class of people is being discriminated on the basis of religion.

The CAA which came into effect from January 11 has been facing widespread opposition. Protests against it are still going on throughout the country.

The AIMMM has submitted to the Supreme Court that the CAA stands to threaten the most fundamental and core values of the Constitution. The CAA has been advertised by the government as carrying concessions for grant of citizenship to a select few from select countries on the grounds of religion thereby standing in violation of the principle of secularism, a basic structure of the Constitution, the PIL stated.
