Star Hospitals Conducts First Dual Lobe Liver Transplant in Telangana & AP

This intricate surgery, classified as very high risk lasted for 16 hours

Hyderabad: Star Group of Hospitals, in the Financial District of Hyderabad, achieved a monumental feat in the medical field by successfully conducting the first-ever Dual Lobe Liver Transplant in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Dual Lobe Liver Transplant is an incredibly demanding and challenging surgical procedure, rarely done in India and even in nations such as South Korea, who are renowned for achieving the world's highest success rates in this surgery.

Dr. Raghavendra Babu, Chief Liver Transplant & Hepatobiliary Surgeon at Star Hospitals conducted the procedure on a 35-year-old man named Mr Mahesh, from Kurnool, who was battling end-stage liver disease and weighed 116 kg. He now stands among the select few surgeons in India who have achieved success in the Dual Lobe Liver Transplant.

Mahesh's condition posed challenges as neither his wife nor his brother were suitable donors due to size constraints and health conditions, respectively. With a shortage of suitable cadaver donors, the medical team at Star Hospitals took to performing the Dual Lobe Liver Transplant.

This intricate surgery, classified as very high risk lasted for 16 hours, with Dr. Raghavendra Babu leading a team of expert surgeons and healthcare professionals, including Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, Dr. Raghuram Reddy, Dr. Sunil, Dr. Bharath Kumar Nara, and Dr. TV Aditya Chowdary.

"We are witnessing a significant change in Liver Transplantation in India. Today, we're celebrating a life saved at Star Hospitals. It's quite usual to see overweight patients struggling with end-stage liver failure. Unfortunately, many of these patients don't survive the ordeal. But our team's dual lobe liver transplant is a ray of hope for such patients all over India.", remarked Dr Rahul Medakkar, Group Chief Operating Officer, Star Group of Hospitals.

This achievement opens doors for patients grappling with end-stage liver failure.
