Hyderabad: Rs 100 crore spent on jails each year

prisoners are housed at the Chanchalguda jail, the Central prison at Cherlapally and the Warangal district jail.

Hyderabad: Following his sentencing earlier this week, gangster Bhanu Kiran became the 1,000th life convict in the state. He was convicted for the murder of faction leader Maddelacheruvvu Suri.

The government spends Rs150 per day on each prisoner which includes food, electricity, medicines and toilet essentials. For 1,000 life prisoners it totals to Rs1.5 lakh per day.

The male prisoners are housed at the Chanchalguda jail, the Central prison at Cherlapally and the Warangal district jail. Women are housed in a special prison.

Women are generally released after 14 years, based on good conduct. It is wise to release them on remission as they turn very weak and the purpose of serving imprisonment is not met. Prisoners involved in terrorism and extremism are made to serve life term,” said Director General, Prisons, V.K. Singh.

In 2017, the government gave Rs100 crore to the prisons department. About 75 per cent is spent on salaries, followed by maintenance and well being of the prisoners.
