Thanjavur: 589 village panchayats host special grama sabha

Thanjavur: Special grama sabha meetings were held in all 589 village panchayats in Thanjavur district on Wednesday to discuss total sanitation under the Swachh Bharath scheme.

A. Annadurai, Thanjavur district collector, took part in the grama sabha meeting held at Mela Ulur in Orathanadu Panchayat union. He said that it has been decided to declare the Thanjavur district as total sanitation district on January 2 and open defecation free district on December 31.

A target of 3,78,955 individual toilets has been fixed this year for Thanjavur district out of which 2,30,300 toilets have been already constructed. Remaining 1,48,700 toilets are under construction. These will be completed before December 31, this year.

The government is giving a subsidy of '12,000 for construction of these toilets. “With respect to the Mela Ulur village, there are 879 habitats. Individual toilets are available in 809 of them. Remaining 70 are under construction. These will be completed before December 31” the collector said. He appealed to people to keep the village clean by using individual toilets, not littering garbage or letting out sewage water around houses and in the environs of the village.
