Nellore: No choice' in credit system for students

Private colleges decide subjects unilaterally.

Nellore: The choice based credit system (CBCS) introduced by the government to enable degree students to pursue subject of their choice in the last semester (VI) of the third year yielded no benefits. The colleges, especially private ones, have been insisting them to join in subjects available in the college instead of opting for subject of their choice.

Their recommendation is to choose computer courses available in the college even as the government sought effective implementation of the spirit of choice based credit system since it would enhance the much desirable competencies of degree students. The private institutions are averse towards the student’s choice because they have to hire additional teaching staff and pay salaries to teach the subjects chosen by students.

In case of government and aided institutions universities are silent because they cannot provide additional lecturers for the subjects selected by the students and it is also difficult to set question papers if each student selects a different subject from every college. “The CBCS is launched to enable students get specialisation in any subject of their liking but the motto is defeated because the colleges are deciding the subjects,” Principal of a government college alleged.

The common subjects are Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics, History, Political Science, Public Administration, Special English, Special Telugu (BA), and B.Com. The colleges may offer electives depending on local needs in terms of student’s local employability and those chosen electives can be offered in the college. But no such initiative is coming from any college, according to education department officials.
