Steel flyover: Green Tribunal extends stay till Jan 18

The NGT allows the BDA to take up works related to soil sampling and investigation and surveys.

Bengaluru: The National Green Tribunal (NGT), southern bench, on Tuesday considered BDA’s plea to vacate the stay on the steel flyover from Chalukya Circle to Hebbal, but it stayed the construction work until the next hearing, scheduled on January 18.

The NGT allows the BDA to take up works related to soil sampling and investigation and surveys, but no construction works as the interim stay has been extended till next hearing. The Citizens’ Action Forum (CAF) objected for BDA’s move to fell 812 trees to pave way for the flyover, without holding public consultation.

The CAF said that the BDA failed to obtain environment impact assessment approved by the state level environment authority. It may be recalled that Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrasekhar has exposed the state government had failed to obtain permission from the BBMP tree officer for tree cutting and they had not done environment impact assessment on the project.

Welcoming the extension of stay Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF) said the clarification by the NGT that no construction activity should be taken up is a great relief to the city residents.
