Hyderabad may soon get a clean air authority to check rising pollution in the city.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad may soon get a clean air authority to check rising pollution in the city, said municipal administration minister K.T. Rama Rao on Tuesday. Replying to a query in the Legislative Assembly on noise pollution in the GHMC limits, Mr Rao said the state government is studying the idea. The Assembly expre-ssed the concern over increase in air, water and noise pollution in the city.

According to a source apportionment study, vehicles caused 49 per cent of the pollution, road dust 33, secondary pollutants 8, biomass burning 4, coal 4 and cement 2 per cent. During question hour, MIM Floor leader Akabaruddin Owaisi said people were suffering due to the pollution in the city, which stood 24th in Asia. He sought a meeting with city legislators on the issue.

Mr Rao said data showed that noise levels were exceeding standards by up to 15 per cent. Water quality in 17 out of the 19 tanks did not meet the criteria. He Mr Rao said the government had identified 1,545 polluting industries which would be shifted outside of the Outer Ring Road. He said the government would send notices to the industries to shift out, and help them with infrastructure.
