Thrissur: X-ray units, cath labs registered sans govt nod

He said that the High Court had accepted his writ petition on the matter and had sent notices to the chief secretary.

Thrissur: The registrations of the X-ray units, scanning centres and cath labs are being done in Kerala without proper inspection and approval of Directorate of Radiation Safety (DRS) under the state government as the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board in Mumbai associated with the union government is giving online registration without any physical verification.

Due to the oversight of the board, which is now giving registration without the certificate of the DRS, as many as 1,000 X-ray, scanning and cath labs are functioning in the state since February, it is learnt from sources associated with state health department.

"Such units registered on the eLORA system could lead to severe health concerns with no physical inspection by experts either of the DRS or the board," said lawyer and DCC general secretary Shaji J. Kodankandath.

He said that the High Court had accepted his writ petition on the matter and had sent notices to the chief secretary, state health department, AERBoard and DRS.

Sources said, by giving licence to use "human-made radiation," there was every possibility of installing old radiation machines without proper safety in the units across the country.

They said that it was of utmost importance considering the safety of the public taking X-rays and undergoing scanning, the software needed to include a provision for uploading the certificate of the DRS which is given only after ensuring stringent safety norms.
