The Madras high court has observed that one cannot expect the authorities to restore everything overnight in the areas damaged by cyclone Gaja.

Chennai: The Madras high court has observed that one cannot expect the authorities to restore everything overnight in the areas damaged by cyclone Gaja in the state.

A division bench comprising Justices M.Sathyanarayanan and N.Seshasayee made the observation orally when the petition filed by advocate S.Rajanikanth, which sought a direction to declare the Gaja cyclone as National Disaster under the Disaster Management Act, came up for hearing on Tuesday.

Stating that the court will monitor the relief activities, the bench said the media reports says that the government had already allocated Rs 1,000 crore for the relief activities and the relief activities are undertaken by various departments in the affected districts.

Directing the state government to file a status, the bench posted to Nov. 22, further hearing of the petition, which also sought a direction to pay Rs 50 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased and Rs 10 lakh for loss of cattle/crop, besides new concrete houses to those who lost their houses.
