Kerala government to spread farming in 1 lakh fallow plots
Thrissur: The public should react strongly against the move of realtors and private individuals to illegally fill up paddy fields and those involved in illegal reclamation of paddy fields should be tied up and whipped in public, minister for agriculture V S Sunil Kumar said.
The minister was inaugurating farming activities at the 900-acre Kanimangalam paddy fields where the land mafia has allegedly joined hands with some members of the Kole Committee and has been preventing farmers from doing paddy cultivation for the past few years.
“The government is contemplating an amendment in the law so more effective action can be taken. The one lakh ploys presently lying fallow in the state will restart paddy cultivation before the present LDF government completes its term,” Mr Kumar said.
Farmers asked to do away with second turn (randam vila) of paddy cultivation
The Irrigation Project Advisory Committee meant for the district has asked paddy farmers here to do away with the second turn (‘randamvilla’) of paddy cultivation.
In the meeting of the committee chaired by collector P. Marykutty, it was observed that the Malampuzha Dam would be opened on December 5 and farmers doing paddy cultivation would get water for their crop from the water reaching the fields. But, it is learnt from officials that those farmers who start the second turn of paddy farming now would find it quite difficult to get water during summer.
