GHMC top tax collector post-demonetisation
Hyderabad: GHMC stood top in tax collection among 22 major cities in the country. Following the demonetisation, the civic body mobilised citizens to pay their taxes with old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. This led to the corporation collecting Rs 110 crore revenue in 10 days towards property tax, trade licence renewals and LRS fee.
The Union ministry of urban development analysed receipts of taxes at 22 urban civic bodies. It was revealed that there was a 312.04 per cent increase in revenue collections till November 19, compared to the entire month last year.
The survey covered Agra, Ahmedabad, Kakinada, Vijayawada, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Ranchi, Faridabad, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Chennai, Kalyan, Thane, Tirupathi, Guntur, Bhopal, Raipur, Nagpur and Lucknow.
The 22 corporations collected Rs 274 crore in property tax in November last year, which zoomed to Rs 855 crore in 19 days this month.
GHMC stood first with a 2,350 per cent increase, from Rs 8 crore in November last year to Rs 188 crore till November 19.
