GHMC asks data on GE importer

The GHMC food wing said that the packets mentioned the name of SR International as importer.

Hyderabad: GHMC food safety officials have written to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India seeking details of the firm SR International which supplied genetically engineered products that were illegally imported from the United States.

GHMC food safety designated officer, central zone, K. Balaji Raju quoted a story in these columns and the report given by the State Food Laboratories that found that GE foods were “prohibited, unsafe and misbranded”.

The letter said: “Following the news report published in Deccan Chronicle on October 21 we have sent samples of Chocolate Cheerios of General Mills for analysis to the State Food Laboratories at Nacharam which said it is prohibited.”

The GHMC food wing said that the packets mentioned the name of SR International as importer. “When we served notice, SR International failed to reply. So we are seeking details from FSSAI,” the GHMC official said.

The Food Safety Laboratories has said the sale of GE foods was the violation of labelling rules and Section 22 of the FSSAI Act. The GHMC has also served notices under the Food Safety and Standards Act on Balaji Grand Bazaar at Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, for selling the foodstuff.
