Bengaluru: 91-year-old undergoes hip fracture surgery
Bengaluru: 91-year-old Ramaiah H.Y. broke his left hip bone after a fall on October 15 and was brought to Hosmat hospital the same day. Doctors said that as the population is aging, instances of hip fractures among the elderly are increasing. It is necessary for doctors to surgically fix hip fractures to relieve pain and to be able to turn patients to avoid bedsores, pneumonia and blood clots. The surgery is also necessary for patients to get out of bed without pain.
Dr Thomas Chandy, chairman and chief of orthopaedics, who operated on Mr Ramaiah along with Dr Vijay Girish, said, “On October 16, Ramaiah underwent a surgery, Dynamic Hip Screw fixation (DHS), where the thigh bone fracture was successfully fixed.” Mr Ramaiah, who was discharged on October 19, is able to walk properly again and has returned to pre-injury state. At Hosmat, 107 patients between 90 and 100 years of age and four patients above 100 years have successfully undergone bone surgeries since 2012. Of these, 82 were for hip fractures and 25 for other fractures.
