Bengaluru: With extensive uses of in vitro fertilization (IVF) methods and fast paced of life of the young couples, delivering twins is no longer a happenstance but often a preferred option.

“The craze for having twins has almost doubled in Bengaluru as compared to other metro cities during the last three years. More than eight out of 10 couples demand twins, especially in case of working parents,” Dr. Manjula B.C., Infertility and IVF specialist, Indira IVF Hospital. Many couples prefer to complete their family in one shot by delivering twins.

For almost five years, Akhila (name changed) waited to conceive and thought she would be childless for rest of her life. "It was a kind of a mental harassment as I was facing a social stigma of being infertile, despite undergoing treatment at many places," she said. She had almost lost hopes of having a child and stopped visiting doctors for the treatment as well.

“It was not easy for me or for my family to take it. I was almost on the edge of going into depression when one of my friends convinced me to visit a private hospital in the city,” Akhila said.

She was later blessed with twins, Rakshith and Dikshith, who were conceived through IVF. The doctor implanted two embryos which later resulted in twins. The ultrasound reports revealed that there were two distinct sacs and within each of these a tiny flickering speck of a heartbeat. Akhila was also excited to deliver healthy and normal babies.

Dr Manjula said that unlike Akhila and her husband, many couples are opting for IVF by choice to be blessed with twin babies. “It's more of a trend among young couples these days, especially the ones who yearn to have twins and find it "cute" to have two kids but one pregnancy. Nearly among 80% of the couples opting for IVF the question foremost in their minds is Will this technique increase our chances to be blessed with twins or triplet,” she added.

She also said that chances of having twins will be impossible if only one embryo is transferred and may also affect the success rate of getting pregnant. Among many factors, age of a woman, her physical health and embryo viability play major role in the success of IVF cycles.
