Submit progress on probe into Bitumen purchase: Madras High Court

The officials of state highways department in collusion with contractors have cashed out Rs 800 to 1000 crore.

Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption to file a progress report relating to its probe into the alleged irregularities in the purchase of bitumen for road works in the state. A division bench comprising Justices M.M.Sundresh and M.Sundar gave the directive and posted after four weeks, further hearing of a PIL from RTI activist G.Balaji, which sought a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities to the tune of Rs 1000 crore in the purchase of bitumen.

In his petition, Balaji alleged that the officials of state highways department in collusion with contractors have cashed out Rs 800 to 1000 crore from 2014-16 in the guise of procuring bitumen for road laying and maintenance work.
