MP: Man forced to bury wife due to lack of money to perform last rites

According to the police, the childless couple had to beg to make both ends meet.

Bhopal: In a heart-rending incident, an old man in a Madhya Pradesh village was forced to bury the body of his deceased wife in his courtyard owing to lack of money to perform her last rites, police said on Thursday.

Acting on tip off, the police on Thursday raided the house of Narayan Tiwari (72) in Fatehpur village in Shadol district and exhumed the body of his wife Kuntibai (68), who died in July this year.

“We were shocked to learn from the old man that he was too poor to afford last funeral rites for his wife. Hence, he decided not to alert the villagers about his wife’s death and quietly buried the body in the courtyard. It was raining very heavily that day,” said Uma Shankar Yadav, in-charge of Singhpur police station.

According to the police, the childless couple had to beg to make both ends meet. The old died of prolonged illness. Villagers got curious when they did not see her for a long time and therefore informed the police.
