Karnataka: Youth Congress drive to enroll 15 lakh members
Bengaluru: Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (KPYCC) will launch a membership drive from its party office on Anand Rao Circle in the city from October 22.
Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao, Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and MLC Rizwan Ahmed said the drive was to enroll at least 15 lakh youth across the State.
Office-bearers of the youth wing would tour all districts to enroll new members. The previous drive held in 2014 had resulted in enrollment of six lakh youth into the party.
On the steel bridge controversy, they defended the state government's decision to go ahead with the project despite the hue and cry by opposition parties. They claimed that the steel bridge flyover was a panacea for the current traffic chaos on Ballari Road.
The opposition BJP members were objecting to this project for 'political reasons'. The saffron party had forgotten that the steel bridge flyover was first mooted by previous Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, they said.
The Congress leaders rubbished the Bharatiya Janata Party’s accusations on the escalation in project cost by around '500 crore and said global tenders were called for executing this project as it would ease the congestion on Kempe Gowda International Airport Road.
“Toll will be collected from vehicle users since it involves a huge cost. The city is in need of better infrastructure to ease the movement of traffic. Our party is not against protecting greenery but some trees have to be cut for construction of the flyover.”
