Sircilla: Heavy rains pull down part of bridge

The tender to construct the 190-metre bridge was bagged by Sai Construction, Hyderabad, for Rs 28 crore and the work started in 2016.

Sircilla: A part of an under construction four-lane bridge over Mulavagu at Vemulawada in Rajanna Sircilla district collapsed on Friday following heavy rains.

The tender to construct the 190-metre bridge was bagged by Sai Construction, Hyderabad, for Rs 28 crore and the work started in 2016. The government released Rs 16 crore for the first phase of construction. Without fully completing the work on two lanes, the contractor started work on the other two lanes.

Owing to heavy downpour, inflows into Mulvagu increased considerably due to which one of the pillars tilted, leading to cracks and partial collapse of the bridge.

R&B department executive engineer Vigneshwar Reddy said the construction of the second portion of the bridge was in an intermediate stage when, due to rains and floods in Mulavagu, centring and iron rods got washed away. After rains receded, the entire damaged span and beams will be dismantled and reconstructed at the cost of the contracting agency, he said.
