Ban mining in Nallamala: CPI to Telangana Governor
Hyderabad: A delegation of the Communist Party of India called on Governor Tamilsai Sounderarajan on Friday and requested her to intervene and stop exploration for uranium in the Nallamala forests.
In a memorandum handed over to the Governor, the CPI pointed out that following protests by various groups, including local people, environmentalists, mass organisations and political parties, even the state government had come under pressure and passed a unanimous resolution against the Atomic Minerals Directorate and Department of Atomic Energy’s proposal to mine uranium in Nallamala forests.
Talking to media after presenting the memorandum, CPI leaders criticised what they called TRS government’s double standards in passing the resolution when the government itself had given permission for exploration of uranium at the initial stage.
CPI National Secretary K Narayana said, “It is very important that the ongoing efforts to mine uranium in the area be stopped. Otherwise Chenchu tribes numbering seventy thousand will be severely affected and the largest tiger reserve forest in India will go into extinction.”
