Hyderabad: Sandeep sees MIL hand in attack

Have been getting death threats since 2015 from mother-in-law, says Sandeep.

Hyderabad: Are people of backward castes not human? Don’t we have a right to live a normal life like others? Why can’t a couple from different castes get married? Those are the questions Sandeep asks as he weeps and prays for Madhavi’s health. “I cannot leave home without police protection and am living in fear now. If anything happens to my wife, I will kill myself,” he said, adding that it was Madhavi’s mother all along who was asking him to back off as he belonged to the SC category. He says that he has been getting death threats since 2015. “She must have provoked her husband, Manoharachary, to attack us as he had met us a couple of times post the wedding and even had food with us,” he says.

Sandeep got discharged from Neelima hospital and met his wife Madhavi and her family at Yashoda hospital in Somajiguda along with his mother on Thursday evening.

Speaking to this newspaper, he said that he first met Madhavi at an examination centre in 2013 and they were sitting in adjacent benches. “She was a student of St. Joseph’s school and I started meeting her ever since and proposed to her in 2014. Her family got to know about us in 2015 and her mother, Lakshmi, called me home and threatened me saying that I am a Dalit from a backward caste and that she would never let her daughter get married to me. Madhavi and I stopped talking for a month. But Madhavi called me and told that we would get married and that she wanted to be with me,” he said.

On September 12, this year, Madhavi contacted Sandeep and told that she wanted to meet him and get married.
