Database set to track sexual offenders
Hyderabad: The ministry of women and child welfare has set up a database of sexual offenders.
The database called the National Registry of Sexual Offenders is maintained by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
It will share the names, photographs, residential address, fingerprints, DNA samples, Pan and Aadhaar number of convicted offenders with all states so that the offenders can be tracked and monitored even after they are out on bail or have completed their sentences.
In a statement, the ministry of women and child development said, “India is the ninth country in the world to set up and maintain a national registry of sexual offenders.”
“The ministry had requested the home department to create a separate register of persons convicted/ charge-sheeted for committing sexual offences against women & children, defined under IPC and POSCO. After three years of perusal, the cabinet approved the same,” it said.
A separate portal for reporting cybercrime has been established by the government under Nirbhaya funds to facilitate victims/ complaints to report cybercrime issues online.
