899 potholes fixed in a night: BBMP

The court has now set Monday as deadline for BBMP to ensure there are zero portholes in the city.

BENGALURU: After High Court rapped BBMP over the pathetic condition of roads in the city, the Palike on Thursday submitted that it has filled 899 potholes on Wednesday night. The Palike further submitted that during the course of the work, some additional potholes have also been identified and all necessary steps are being taken to fix them at the earliest. The court has now set Monday as deadline for BBMP to ensure there are zero portholes in the city.

The court was hearing the PIL filed in 2015 by one Vijayan Menon over poor road conditions in Bengaluru, which had even led to loss of lives. The court also pulled up BBMP engineers and warned them to work towards restoring the city’s old glory or it would act against them. The Palike has been further directed to submit report on the matter over the quality of work being undertaken and the officials involved in it.

"Between September 19 and 20, the BBMP, in its eight zones and Road Infrastructure Division, has attended and closed 899 potholes till 6 a.m. on Thursday. The work is in progress and BBMP shall work towards fixing all the potholes. During the course of filling the potholes in the intervening night between September 19 and 20, additional potholes have also been identified,” BBMP submitted while seeking three more days for the task.

The Palike also submitted 14 measurement books, as the court said that it expects BBMP that the first and the last pages of other measurement books of other wards related to the work in progress be produced on the next date of hearing.

It was submitted that during the progress of filling up potholes, it has identified 3,071 potholes, of which it filled up 899 and will fill up the remaining 2,172 in three days. However, the petitioner's advocate objected to palike’s submission expressing disbelief and argued that there are at least 12,000 potholes in the city. The court has adjourned the matter to Monday.
