Uri attack: Modi chairs Union Cabinet meeting to discuss India's response
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday morning, in the backdrop of last Sunday's terror attack in Uri in which 18 army soldiers were killed.
The Cabinet Committee on Security held meeting to review the situation arising out of the attack. Rajnath Singh, FM Arun Jaitley and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar attended the meeting.
On Tuesday, India stopped another infiltration attempt in Uri, with security personnel killing 10 terrorists. One army man was also martyred in the operation. The encounter is still on, 19 hours after it began.
Meanwhile, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi reviewed the security situation in Kashmir on Tuesday in the backdrop of the deadly militant attack on an army base in Uri and the ongoing unrest in the valley.
Mehrishi arrived in Srinagar early Tuesday morning and held series of meetings to review security situation across the Kashmir Valley.
He had detailed discussions with top officials from various security forces, police and intelligence agencies.
Mehrishi also called on Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to discuss the prevailing situation in the valley. He left for New Delhi in the evening.
Meanwhile, with New Delhi trying to corner Islamabad over the terror attack in Uri, Pakistan has decided not to send its Intelligence Bureau chief to India to attend the second meeting of High Level Group of Eminent Experts from SAARC countries beginning Thursday.
As per Pakistani sources, Director General of Intelligence Bureau of Pakistan Aftab Sultan will not attend the SAARC meeting and the country will be represented by an official of the Pakistan High Commission.
