Hyderabad High Court pulls up officials on reservoir

Court irked by official apathy to villagers' resettlement, rehabilitation.

Hyderabad: Expressing displeasure at the authorities not taking steps to resettle and rehabilitate project-displaced families in Aluru village of Gattu mandal of Mahbubnagar district which faces submergence from the Ryalampadu balancing reservoir, the High Court ordered the district collector, special collector and the land acquisition officer to appear before it with all the records on Thursday.

Mr Satya Prasad, senior counsel appearing for the petitioners, said revenue authorities with the help of police were forcibly evicting villagers as water released from the Jurala dam was inundating the village.

He told the court that the primary and high school complex, where over 400 students study, was submerged. The rehabilitation and resettlemtn centre had only a primary school. Mr N.S. Arjun Kumar, counsel appearing for another petitioner, told the court that only 200 out of the about 1,400 families could construct their houses in the new centre because the government had not released funds.

The judge directed the collector, special collector and land acquisition officer to visit the village, record the situation on video and submit it to the court. The judge asked counsel for the petitioners to place newspaper clippings before the court, in which it was reported that there had been no resettlement and rehabilitation for the villagers.

HC asks Telangana, AP tospecify local students:

The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday directed the two Telugu states to file affidavits on the issue of applicability of local and non-local rules for management quota MBBS seats in private medical colleges. A division bench comprising Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice Anis was dealing with petitions questioning private medical and dental college managements’ associations for allotting seats in B category to those who had qualified in NEER from outside the two states as well.

They contended that as per the Presidential order and Article 371-D of Constitution of India all seats have to be given to AP and Telangana students. The petitioners brought to the notice of the court a judgement rendered by a division bench of the High Court regarding a similar issue in which it had declared that all the seats in private engineering colleges were to be allotted as per the Presidential Order only.

The bench told the counsels of both states to file an affidavit clearly stating whether they would permit the MBBS seats in private colleges in both states to be allotted to students from other states.
