Bengaluru: Western Railways have now fixed sheets under the rail over bridges to avoid leakage of toilet waste from running trains on to the roads.
This follows numerous complaints by motorists that while passing through rail under bridges they would often come across waste water falling on the road from toilets of the passing trains.
As no action was taken earlier, the motorists used to stop their vehicles if a train was moving on the bridge and wait till it passed. This used to affect the traffic flow and result in traffic jams. The problem was more acute at bridges on rail routes with high frequency.
In June, the city Mayor had written to the South Western Railway (SWR) office seeking to fix sheets under the railway bridge to avoid leakages.
The SWR later took up the matter and fixed the sheets to prevent leakage and help motorists move freely without worrying about anything falling on them.
A senior BBMP officer said that they had identified the railway under bridges where there was leakage and submitted the list to the Mayor, who took it up with SWR.
“People were complaining that several bridges were leaking and they hesitate to cross if a train was passing, as the waste used to would fall between the gaps in the sheets. They used to stop and wait for the train to pass,” the officer added.
He said the traffic police department too had raised the issue with us. “For example, there were frequent traffic jams near the railway under bridge on Tannery Road, as motorists would wait for the train to pass.
