Chennai: Ganja intoxicated criminals murder police informer

The incident happened at around 10 am on Tuesday morning in Govindhavadi Agaram in Kanchipuram.

Chennai: Ganja intoxicated criminals murdered an elderly man on Tuesday and attacked his family members for allegedly reporting their drug dealing business to local police. The incident happened at around 10 am on Tuesday morning in Govindhavadi Agaram in Kanchipuram. Police identified the deceased as Sanjeevi Rayan (62), a resident of Kavan street, Agaram.

According to police, the families of Sanjeevi Rayan and his brother Thanancheziyan (50) live in the same house in the village. They own a grocery shop and run a fertilizer business. Sources said that a local ganja peddler Purushothaman and his gang were involved in illegal activities in the village, which was objected to by the family. Due to this, Purushathaman and his gang developed enmity with the family and began threatening them.

Earlier this month, Kanchipuram district police arrested Purushothaman allegedly based on the tip-off given by Sanjeevi. Pushothaman came out on bail and again started threatening the family. Following this, Sanjeevi approached Babuchetty Chatram police to give protection to his family. It is alleged that no policemen were assigned to protect the family.

Sources said that on Tuesday morning, around 10 men in two-wheelers barged into Sanjeevi’s house and attacked the family. The ganja gang pulled Sanjeevi to the street and stabbed him with a machete. Sanjeevi's family members Dakshana Moorthy (25), Yuva Raj (22) , Subashini (35) Siva Kumar (40) Thanacheziyan and two other neighbours were attacked by the gang.

The gang fled the spot when people started to gather. On being informed, Babuchetty Chatram police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Kanchipuram government hospital. Later Yuva Raj and Daksina Moorthy were shifted to Stanley government hospital in the city. Babuchetty Chatram police have registered a case and launched a search for Purushothaman and his gang.
