Hubballi: With the Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers in spate due to the heavy rainfall in many parts of Maharashtra, several bridges have been submerged in Mudhol taluk of Bagalkote district and standing crops have been inundated, causing a huge loss to farmers.
The sugarcane, maize and onion crops in the river basin have been submerged by the overflowing Ghataprabha in Mirji village of Mudhol taluk and the Holebasaveshwar temple in Machakanur village has gone under water. As many as 15 bridges-cum-barrages in the taluk have also gone under water due to the release of water from the Hidkal dam in Belagavi district, forcing people to take a longer route to reach their villages.
People of several villages in Jamkhandi taluk are also contending with floods with the Krishna river overflowing. Tahasildar D G Mahant said several bridges in Davaleshwar, Nandagavi and other villages had been submerged but the water could recede following release of more water from the Almatti dam.
The Almatti dam has received an inflow of 1,28,000 cusecs owing to release of water from the Koyna reservoir, prompting officials to release an equal amount of water to prevent floods. "The Ghataprabha river in Mudhol taluk has been in full spate over the last few days. We may be able to save crops like sugarcane if the water drains out from the fields in a day or two," he added.
