Heavy rains grip Telangana, Andhra Pradesh; flood-like situation likely

Hyderabad: North Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh that are under the grip of a heavy rainfall warning have already received over 100 mm of rain and both states are staring at a flood situation, weather officials said. The southwest monsoon has been vigorous over TS and coastal AP, however, it is weak over Rayalseema. A fresh weather system has developed over the Bay of Bengal which is likely to progress in the northwest direction bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to TS and AP, apart from Odisha and Vidharbha.

On Monday, extremely heavy rain occurred at B. Kothagudem, very heavy rain at Khammam, J. Bhupalpally, Suryapet and Adilabad, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Kamareddy and Medak of Telangana. The AP districts of West Godavari, East Godavari and Krishna, Vizianagaram,Visakhapatnam and Guntur witnessed extremely heavy rain.

While the intensity over Kodagu of Karnataka which had included a warning of possible floods has decreased, another low pressure area is likely to be formed in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to bring more rain to TS and AP. Telangana state is currently rain surplus by 17 per cent, while Coastal AP is 26 per cent. However the districts of Rayalseema have a shortfall of 39 per cent.

Heavy rainfall warning alert has been issued for Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh up to August 22. Scattered rainfall of intensity ranging light to moderate occurred throughout Hyderabad on Monday. Maximum rainfall was recorded at Medchal, Alwal, Bollaram, Kapra , Malkajgiri and Moula ali, however widespread drizzle occurred throughout the city.
