Heavy rains disrupt life in Warangal

The flood-prone areas have been put under watch and their condition is being monitored round-the-clock.

WARANGAL: Heavy rains lashed several parts of erstwhile Warangal district on Monday disrupting normal life. Warangal city received heavy rainfall from Sunday night till Monday afternoon, flooding some of the low lying colonies. District collector Amrapali Kata said the district administration was on alert and there was no need for citizens to panic. The flood-prone areas have been put under watch and their condition is being monitored round-the-clock.

Though the rain subsided towards the evening, roads in several colonies were flooded. In Jayashankar Bhupalapalli district, the Eturnagaram–Burgampahad highway got partially washed away due to the heavy flowing Godavari River at Kamalapur in Mangapet mandal. The police immediately put up barricades and danger signs to alert several commuters and to ease the movement of traffic.

The opencast mining was also affected. Rain water flooded the open casts and also damaged the road leading to the quarry. As a result, mining was hampered several times during the last ten days. Singareni incurred a loss of Rs 8 crore. Many streams overflowed with the continuous rainfall and the flood water flowed on to the roads disconnecting interior villages. The Morancha vagu was flowing heavily over the causeway in Mulugu Ghanpur mandal.

In Eturunagarm, the Jeedivagu was overflowing cutting off vehicular movement between Eturunagarm and other interior villages. The movement of people between Wazedu and Kongala was hampered due to the overflowing Kongala vagu. In Chityal mandal, the Kondengala vagu was overflowing since the early hours and the Jadalapet and Kothapeta route was cut off. There was no transport available for 10 villages in the mandal.

In Warangal rural district, the Pakhal Lake in Khanapur mandal received heavy inflows taking the water level to 28.3 feet. The lake's capacity is 30 feet. Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari asked the collectors of all five districts to be prepared for any kind of emergency with manpower, machinery and rehabilitation centres.
