Monsoon fruitful to Tamil Nadu, city lake breaches

In Tamil Nadu, except for three stations Nilgiris, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli the monsoon has been on the positive side.

Chennai: The southwest monsoon has been fruitful to the state of Tamil Nadu, as 12 weather stations have noted ‘largely excess’ rainfall, while 11 stations recorded ‘excess,’ according to data from the Regional Meteorological Centre.

The data, last updated on August 16, shows that the Union territory of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are on the positive side as they recorded 54 percent and 33 percent excess rainfall from this monsoon. Surprisingly, Kerala, where the monsoon commences, is on the deficient side (of 29 per cent).

In Tamil Nadu, except for three stations – Nilgiris, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli – the monsoon has been on the positive side. Even though the rains have receded in the state over the past two days, there are chances of them resuming in the next few days, said weather experts.

Weather blogger K. Srikanth said, “Thunderstorms have slowed down over most of the Tamil Nadu. Windy conditions are expected to prevail over most parts of the state under the influence of strengthening westerlies as the low pressure straddling the eastern parts of central India moves further west over the next 24 to 72 hours.”
