Kerala: MBBS admissions in complete disarray

CEE fails to make allotment to 6 medical colleges for various reasons even though options were invited.

Thiruvananthapuram: The confusion over admission process to MBBS courses continued even a day after the publication of the allotment list by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE).

The CEE failed to make the allotment to six medical colleges, one Unani medical college, one siddha medical college and one Ayurveda college for various reasons even though options were invited.

Of these, allotment was not made to Karuna Medical College, Palakkad, Kannur Medical College, Anjarakandy, Malabar Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kozhikode, SUT Academy of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram, Ashtamgam Ayurveda Chikilsalayam and Vidya Peedham, Palakkad, Santhigiri Siddha Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram and Markaz Unani Medical College, Kozhikode, for the lack of affiliation with the Kerala University of Health Sciences.

The allotment has not been made in the current phase to MES Medical College, Perinthalmanna, Malappuram, and Dr Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakonam, Thiruvananthapuram which withdrew from the agreement with the government.

Moreover, students were asked to submit options for Rs 11 lakh as the fee in colleges other than Christian medical colleges and Academy of Medical Sciences, Pariyaram.

Of them, Christian Medical Colleges agreed to Rs 5 lakh and Pariyaram a multi layer fee including Rs 2.5 lakh in government quota.

However, the CEE made allotments for Rs 5 lakh in colleges other than Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Ernakulam and KMCT Medical College, Kozhikode, who moved the apex court for fixing the fee at '11 lakh.

As a result, students who did not submit options in these colleges due to a higher fee may move court against restricting their choice. Many had failed to give options as they were not in a position to pay '5 lakh as Demand Draft drawn in favour of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, payable at Thiruvananthapuram and balance '6 lakh as bank guarantee drawn in favour of the principal of the college concerned or DD drawn in favour of the CEE payable at Thiruvananthapuram.

One of the problems faced by the government was to ensure that the admissions are completed before August 31, the deadline fixed by Medical Council of India (MCI). Moreover, the CEE would have to conduct the admissions to vacant seats through spot allotment after the second phase.

For extending the deadline or conducting the third phase of allotment, the government needed the approval of the SC.
