Bengaluru: Install eco-friendly Ganesha idols and immerse them to find silver or gold coins. This is a novel way of Samarpana Seva Trust to encourage people to install eco-friendly Ganesha idols and to prevent people from polluting the lakes.
Trust president Shivakumar Hosamani said that the idols have been made of clay and cow dung and coins have been embedded in them. Around 60 per cent of the idols will have coins. The aim is to get people interested in this eco-initiative. May be in coming years, the BBMP, BDA and even artisans will follow the trick to attract customers, he felt. The trust has plans to create 10,000 such idols. Already, 6,000 idols have been made and most of them have been booked by customers. Of the 10,000 idols, four have gold coins, while most will have silver coins. A 7-inch idol costs Rs 100, 9-inch idol Rs 180, 11-inch Rs 200, 14-inch Rs 250, 16-inch Rs 450 and 19-inch for Rs 550, he said.
The initiative was flagged off by union minister D. V. Sadananda Gowda.
Earlier in the day, Mayor G. Padmavathi, BBMP commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad along with other BBMP staff took part in an awareness rally on eco-friendly Ganeshas. Various NGOs too took part in the rally.
