Backward Classes body to move Supreme Court on quota

They alleged that the Municipalities Act and Panchayat Raj Act have reduced the BC reservations from 34% to 22%.

Hyderabad: The core committee of the National Backward Classes Welfare Association has decided to move the Supreme Court against certain amendments made to the Municipalities Act and Panchayat Raj Act which reduced the reservations for the community from 34 per cent to 22 per cent in gram panchayats and urban local bodies.

The committee which met under the leadership of association president R. Krishnaiah condemn-ed the decision of the TRS government to impose a 50 per cent ceiling on reservations. It said that it was unfortunate that BC ministers and MLAs remained silent when the Bills were passed.

They asked why the state government was pegging BC reservations at 34 per cent when the Centre had increased the quota to 60 per cent by relaxing the 50 per cent cap to give reservations to economically weaker sections (EWS).

The BC leaders said that it was not proper for the state government to limit the reservations to 50 per cent when the Mahara-shtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments providing more than 60 per cent quota. The committee resolved to engage the senior advocates to challenge the new laws.
