The police have also taken the Shiroor Math in Udupi and Shiroor village into custody for investigation.

Mangaluru: Police officials who have beefed up security at Shiroor Math, have started an investigation into the death of Lakshmivara Teertha Swamiji.

This follows a complaint by Lathavya Acharya, the Diwana of the Math and brother of Lakshmivara Teertha Swamiji who has raised doubts over the death of the Swamiji. Based on this complaint, Hiriyadka police have registered a UDR case under Section 174C of CRPC.

The police have also taken the Shiroor Math in Udupi and Shiroor village into custody for investigation. All the activities in the Math are being supervised by police officials. A Kasturba Hospital press statement stated that there was 'suspicion of poisoning,' and the police team is probing the exact food consumed by the seer at the math and if he had consumed anything in hospital. The body was subjected to a post-mortem and the report is likely to come out in a few days.

Police teams have also gone to both hospitals where the seer was treated to probe the case. They are collecting details about his health from Kasturba Hospital where the seer breathed his last. The police team has also been to the private hospital where the seer was first admitted and was under treatment for over 14 hours.

According to sources, the seer had walked into the hospital and had complained about diarrhea. His condition was not very critical then. Though he was provided treatment for diarrhea, his condition deteriorated and he was shifted to Kasturba Hospital at Manipal. His condition further deteriorated and he died at Manipal.
