Tamil Nadu: Doctor practising for 8 years held sans authorised certificate

24 quack cases reported till now this year.

COIMBATORE: Nearly eight ‘successful’ years of ‘acting’ as a certified doctor by 32-year-old S. Arul came to an end when he was arrested on Thursday by Kuniamuthur police for practicing medicine without an authorised certifcate.

Arul has been practicing in his clinic at Kulathupalayam, Kovaipudur as a general physician since 2009. “I have received several phone calls from local residents who complained about Arul treating patients without having any authorised certification from the Medical Council of India. So I went today and inspected the clinic with my team. He has a display in his clinic saying he is an M.D. Further enquiries revealed that he is an M.B.B.S. from Russia which is not valid in our country,” said Dr S. Kannan, joint director of Health Services, Coimbatore.

He told the officials that he had appeared for the screening test in India but could not clear it. “The actual problem students wh-o study abroad face is in clearing the exam. The MCQs are very tough,” he added. This is the fourth such case in last three months. The previous ones were reported from Thondamuthur, Alandurai, Varadharajapuram, and Singanallur.
