Hyderabad: Sai Kumar Kambhampati, an inter-first year student was flying a kite on a bright day, when in a freak accident, he was electrocuted by a 33 KV live wire. He was rushed to the hospital, but his right hand had to be amputated. This was a huge blow for the Sai who was in the 10th grade then and had to appear for his exams soon.
The gross negligence of the hospital coupled by the government’s inertia almost cost him his future, but after huge difficulties, he managed to get permission for a ‘writer’ who would write his papers. It was all worth the trouble as Sai scored a high grade of 7.
This is his story: “My kite got entangled with an electric wire on Makar Sankranti, I used an iron to disentangle it. It was a 33 KV livewire that caused the shock. The intensity was so high, that I fell flat on my face. I was immediately rushed to Osmania General Hospital, where on day one the doctors cut my skin. After being under observation for 2-3 days, the infection spread and they had to amputate my right hand. My main worry was my 10 class board examination. With great difficulty, the District Education Office of Nalgonda on the recommendation of the TS Education Minister granted me permission to dictate my answers to a 9 standard boy. My efforts did not go in vain and I secured 7 grade out of 9.
“However, this wasn’t as easy as it sounds. It was a task for me to get a Permanent Handicapped certificate from a government agency. Firstly the Osmania General hospital took days to issue my medical condition.
