Bengaluru: 38-year-old man dies for want of ICU care

Devaraja was brought into Yelahanka General Hospital at 3 pm by some people, who saw him lying on the footpath in Old Town at Yelahanaka.

Bengaluru: A thirty-eight-year-old man, identified as Devaraja, breathed his last at Yelahanka General Hospital on Thursday morning after being sent back from Victoria Hospital.

Devaraja was brought into Yelahanka General Hospital at 3 pm by some people, who saw him lying on the footpath in Old Town at Yelahanaka.

He was then resuscitated and brought to his senses and sent off to Victoria Hospital in an ambulance and a police intimation was given for the same. “He was brought unconscious and his condition was serious. He was an alcoholic and was diagnosed with Hepatic encephalopathy. We then referred him to Victoria Hospital for proper treatment,” said Dr Kumar, the hospital administrator.

However, he was sent back to Yelahanka General hospital after a few hours. “Devaraja was sent back from Victoria hospital and he required ambulance care,” said Dr Kumar. He denied allegations that he was kept along with other patients.

“We tried resuscitating him but we lost him at 6.30 am on Thursday and the body was there at the casualty for sometime, after which it was moved into the mortuary. After police verification the body has now been sent to Ambedkar Medical College,” Dr Kumar added. “ICU facility is being built at the hospital and maybe in a few months time we will be having a functional ICU care unit,” added Dr Manohar, THO, Yelahanka.

Victoria denies allegation
However, Victoria hospital authorities denied receiving any such patient. Dr Balaji Pai, special officer, Emergency and Trauma Care Centre, Victoria Hospital said, “We admit destitute and unknown cases every day and hence it would not be right to say we refused admission. And, there has been no ambulance coming in from Yelahanka on Wednesday at the trauma centre.” The doctor added that it is a standard rule to admit all the cases. “The only reason can be no ICU beds available at that time.”
