Eight held in Guntur for selling black fungus injections at Rs.30,000

The government is providing the injections for free of cost to patients in govt hospitals and at nominal charges to private hospitals

VIJAYAWADA: Guntur urban police arrested eight persons for selling black fungus injections in black and that too at abnormal prices. They seized 46 Amphotericin-B injections and Rs three lakh cash from their possession.

Addressing a press conference in Guntur on Sunday, Guntur range DIG Trivikram Varma said that Guntur urban SP K. Arif Hafeez had received information about the injections being sold in the black market by a gang.

Varma said that the gang cpmprised Perikala Vinod Kumar, Popuri Koteswara Rao, Anne Gopikrishna, Kota Nageswara Rao, Addanki Lakshminarayana, Telukutla Venkateswarlu, Madasu Neelambaram and Yeleswarapu Venkata Rajesh. He said that the accused were working as medical representatives and running medical shops in various places.

He said that the government is providing the injections for free of cost to patients in government hospitals and against nominal charges to private hospitals through the concerned district joint collectors.

Varma said that the gang was selling the injections for up to Rs 30,000 per vial while exploiting the desperation of the patient’s family. He said that the police formed four special teams which nabbed the gang at Tummaranga Reddy Nagar Sunday morning. The DIG praised the police teams for their swift action.
