Exclusive Yoga OPD to be launched at National Institute of Siddha

In the State, Governor Banwarilal Purohit will lead the celebrations at Raj Bhavan here at 7 am.

Chennai: As hundreds of school and college students besides Yoga enthusiasts stretch and bend assuming several postures, to display their prowess during the fifth International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Friday, the National Institute of Siddha (NIS) at Tambaram Sanatorium, here, will launch an exclusive OPD, on the occasion, to treat various aliments of the people.

In the State, Governor Banwarilal Purohit will lead the celebrations at Raj Bhavan here at 7 am. Several Yoga schools and organisations have also planned to hold a session in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

“Yoga is found to be beneficial in several medical conditions. Yoga is found to be effective in disease conditions like artery disease, asthma, OA, Rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, epilepsy, carpal tunnel syndrome, nervous disorders, Musculo skeletal Disorders, psychiatric disorders, etc. To commemorate the IDY, the NIS will launch an exclusive OPD on Friday,” says Dr. N. J. Muthukumar, Associate Professor and Hospital Superintendent (incharge), on Thursday. The OPD will function from 8 am till 12 noon.

The NIS, an autonomous organisation under Ministry of AYUSH, functioning since 2004, has an exclusive PG department for Yoga Maruthuvam since 2016. It is attached to the Ayothidoss Pandithar Hospital (APH), the first NABH Accredited Govt. Siddha hospital providing Siddha healthcare services to the public and imparting clinical training to the Post Graduates of Siddha. On an average 2,000 patients undergo treatment at the hospital every day. The hospital has a bed strength of 200.

Doctors from the department of Siddhar Yoga Maruthuvam conduct individualised therapeutic Yoga sessions for patients who are advised to do Asanas and Pranayamam within the comfortable zone. Everyday more than 100 patients are benefitted from therapeutic yoga sessions of NIS.

In addition to General OPD Siddhar Yogam Maruthuvam OPD, NIS conducts a special OPD for Yogam and Kayakalpam (rejuvenation) from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 12 pm.

“The method of practicing some of the asanas like Pathmasanam, Pathirasanam, Kukitaasanam and Singathanam has been described in the verses of Thirumandiram (versus between 559 to 563). The practice of Yoga brings enormous benefits and positive effects on body and mind. When health concern is of potential issue, the therapeutic approach of Siddhar Yogam finds its importance,” Dr. Muthukumar says and adds that the therapeutic Siddhar Yogam helps in promoting self-healing. “This stresses the importance of individualising each yoga technique to meet the needs of the patient,” he says.
