BENGALURU: Graveyards in Bengaluru, especially those maintained by BBMP, are in a poor condition, weighed down by neglect.

Apart from the fallen leaves, twigs and weeds, graveyards are filled with the leftover flowers, bamboo stretchers, broken pots, plastic covers and items used by the deceased including beds, rugs, chappals etc.

Now BBMP has decided to install waste composter and deploy dedicated staff to clean up the graveyards.

Currently, there is no dedicated staff to look after the graveyards, and they are in bad shape. If the civic body can have staff dedicated to clean the premises regularly, then the condition will improve, said N.S. Ramakanth, solid waste management expert.

"Once in a blue moon, BBMP goes on massive cleanup drive at the graveyards. It will not help in keeping them clean. There should be dedicated staff and based on the size and the amount of garbage being generated, we need to setup waste composters," Ramakanth said.

When DC spoke to Mayor Gangambike, she said steps will be taken to improve the condition of graveyards. "We have reserved `3 crore to improve the graveyards in the city. Many Christian cemeteries are so well maintained. We want to improve the condition of graveyards to such a state,"  Gangambike said.

“We will soon be having dedicated staff and waste composters at graveyards,” she said.
