Assembly holiday for K R Gowriamma birthday
Thiruvananthapuram: In a rare gesture, the Assembly will remain closed on Friday in connection with the 101st birthday of K.R. Gowriamma.
The decision to declare a holiday so that members can take part in the centenary celebrations of legendary communist leader Gowriamma at Chathanadu in Alappuzha was taken following the suggestion made by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
With Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala also agreeing to the suggestion, Speaker Sreeramakrishnan announced that there would be no sitting of the Assembly on Friday.
Soon after question hour, the Speaker read out a statement on Gowri's birthday celebrations.
She is the only surviving member of the first government of the state which was also the first elected communist government led by E.M.S. Nampoothiripad in 1957. She was a party member till she was expelled in 1994.
