Telangana: Very few takers of life science stream for admissions

The life sciences stream offers courses in microbiology, genetics, bio-chemistry, genetics and BSc general.

Hyderabad: Degree colleges have received fewer applications for the life sciences stream for admissions into degree courses when compared to other courses for the forthcoming academic year.

The life sciences stream offers courses in microbiology, genetics, bio-chemistry, genetics and BSc general. Instead students looked more interested in other streams like commerce, management courses and other professional courses where there are good prospects of getting jobs.

The traditional BSc Botany, Zoology Chemi-stry course was more preferred among life sciences.

The more popular courses were BBA, BCom Computers, BSc Compu-ter Science, BSc Statis-tics, BSc Maths, Chem-istry Physics, BA Eco-nomics, History and Political Science and BA Literature.

Mr Ramana Reddy, president Degree Colleges Management Associa-tions, told this newspaper, “Though students are taking up a few life science course this time we received fewer applications and queries for life science courses. There is not much demand of these courses in the market.”

Many students who do not make it in the medical college entrance test often join BSc life sciences courses while they continue to study for the MBBS admissions in the subsequently.

However, ‘long-term’ coaching for the MBBS entrance test of the subsequent year have become popular among students. Here, Inter-mediate pass-outs mostly go to coaching institutes to focus on entrance exams like Neet; they do not have the additional burden of the Plus-2 examination unlike regular students.
