Rs 246 crore allotted for 2015 flood rehabilitation: SP Velumani

He also informed the Assembly that a detailed project report at an estimate for Rs 246 crore has been already prepared.

Chennai: Responding to the DMK legislator S.R. Raja on issues pertaining to Tambaram development and floods, local administration minister S.P. Velumani said that he had demanded the state to work on a report submitted by administrators who worked on 2015 floods.

He also informed the Assembly that a detailed project report at an estimate for Rs 246 crore has been already prepared and is to be executed through public works department and the local civic authorities, he said. The minister also said that government departments has worked on the issue and has identified channels in southern part of Chennai to alleviate floods in case of heavy downpour. It may be noted that Tambaram and Mudhichur were worst affected areas with casualties during December 2015 floods.

DMK legislator S.R. Raja on Tuesday demanded the conversion of Tambaram municipality into corporation considering the huge size and population in the town and its surrounding areas. He said Tambaram municipality itself has a population of 1.75 lakh and about two lakh people come to the bus stand and railway station in the area everyday.

He said the DMK government had taken steps to acquire 13.7 acres of land belonging to defence ministry and asked the State to construct a bus stand on the land. He said a committee was set up to study the December 2015 flood damage. But, the report had not been submitted yet, the MLA said.
