New Indira Gandhi needed, says Mani Shanker Aiyar
Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader Mani Shanker Aiyar said on Tuesday that India needed a more courageous and visionary leader like former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi particularly to solve the agrarian crisis. He was speaking on the subject ‘Indira Gandhi and the agriculture sector’, at a seminar organised by the Telangana Pradesh Congress Kisan Khet as part of the birth centenary celebrations of the former Prime Minister.
He said when Mrs Gandhi took over as Prime Minister, the agriculture sector was facing a severe crisis and India used to depend on food grain imports. She took several bold steps by encouraging banks provide loans to farmers, irrigation was given a major boost. Due to the Green Revolution, the country attained self sufficiency in agricultural production, which was remarkable.
