LED to light up Hyderabad streets
Hyderabad: The Western corridor of Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and Yousufguda will be the first areas to have LED street lighting in the city.
GHMC currently spends Rs 18.07 crore on electricity bills, with LED lights, the power bills will reduce to Rs 7. 78 crore said sources. Last year, the civic body had installed about 750 LED street lights along various stretches in Madhapur and Chandrayangutta areas on a pilot basis.
Of the 4.16 lakh street lights in Greater Hyderabad, 32,500 are in the Circle 10 area covering Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Punja-gutta, Begumpet, Khairat-abad, Lakdi-ka-Pul, Somajiguda, Balkampet, Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar and other places. LED lighting is expected to save up to 60 per cent of energy.
The existing sodium vapour street lights consume about 60 mw of power. The corporation has been spending about Rs 190 crore to maintain them over the years. Currently GHMC consumes about 20 million units of electricity per month.
GHMC commissioner Mr B. Janardhan Reddy said, “The illumination will be 95 per cent. Installation of LED lights in the circle will be taken up by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs of the Union ministry of Power. The total cost of the project will be around Rs 17.72 crore. LEDs have a very long life, almost 15 times of ordinary bulbs and eight to 10 times that of compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). To quantify the conservation, a centralised control monitoring system (CCMS) will be installed. The street lights will be coin tolled by CCMS with automatic on/off times.” Mainte-nance of cables, switches, meters, fixtures, arms, poles, etc. will be under the control of EESL. Damages will be covered under insurance by EESL.
